May 10th was my late father's birthday. He would have been 101 years old today but sadly, he passed away in September 1992 at just 70 years old. Dementia got him in the end.
He was a very quiet man and to be honest, we were never that close. I realise now that all he really wanted from life was a pint, a ciggie and his armchair when he wasn't at his beloved Sheffield Lane Top Working Mens Club.
He joined the navy during the early part of the 2nd World War and served as a gunner on a merchant vessel with a lot of his time at sea as part of the North Sea convoys. Most of his working life was spent at Spaffords at Heeley where he was a radiac operator, cutting steel bars for the manufacture of agricultural equipment.
Hard to think it's nearly 31 years since he passed away. Then again, it's hard to think I retired nearly 10 years ago, we moved to Norton 25 years ago and me and The Duchess have been married for 51 years!
As I said - time flies!!
